SUMMER IN THE PSALMS
True and Lasting Happiness
August 25, 2024 | By Paul Crouthamel

Psalm 19 contrasts the magnificence of God’s general revelation in creation with His specific revelation through His Word, which guides us toward true and lasting happiness. David emphasizes that living according to God’s Word refreshes the soul, brings wisdom, joy, and clarity, and ultimately leads us to a life aligned with God’s will, reflecting the deeper relationship available through Jesus Christ.

MESSAGE NOTES

Psalm 19:1-6
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech; they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.

General Revelation
God revealing Himself to all people, at all times, and in all places proving both His existence and His character qualities.

Special Revelation
God gets up close and personal and reveals Himself through His Word and through Jesus.

Psalm 19:7-9

The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.

Psalm 19:10
They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.

Psalm 19:11
By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

Psalm 1:1-2
Blessed is the one who does walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.

Psalm 19:12-14
But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:14
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:17-18
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
