Summer in the Psalms, Part 1

SUMMER IN THE PSALMS
The Good Life
June 16, 2024 | By Paul Crouthamel

The Psalms, a collection of 150 poems and songs, serve as a spiritual “playlist” guiding the Israelites in worship, prayer, and understanding God’s redemptive story. Psalm 1 introduces the concept of the good life, describing it as a life of joy, contentment, and blessing derived from a right relationship with God, meditating on His word, and avoiding the company of the wicked, ultimately highlighting that true fulfillment comes from living according to God’s ways.

Psalm 1:1-6
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
