God at Work, Part 3

GOD AT WORK
Apprentices and Ambassadors
February 26, 2023 | By Paul Crouthamel

Jesus changes everything. That is the fundamental truth underneath the first of our seven marks of a disciple: identity in Christ. The question is, what does my identity in Christ have to do with my lived experiences with work? According to the apostle Paul, we are the workmanship of God. He is doing something in us so that He can do something through us.

MESSAGE NOTES

Genesis 1:27
Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion.

The Grand Narrative
Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration

Jesus’ work was and is a game changer for how we do our work.

Ephesians 2:1-10
And you were dead in your offenses and sins, in which you previously walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all previously lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our wrongdoings, made us alive together with Christ, and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the boundless riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

1. We have a new Master.
2. We have a new outlook.
3. We have a new assignment.

Colossians 3:1-2
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your heart on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

2 Corinthians 5:17-20
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their wrongdoings against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

Ephesians 6:5-9
Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ; not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. With goodwill render service, as to the Lord, and not to people, knowing that whatever good thing each one does, he will receive this back from the Lord, whether slave or free. And masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.

“If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

Paul Tripp
“Jesus came to be despised and rejected, to have a life of sorrow and grief, to bear our griefs and carry our sorrows, to be stricken, smitten, and afflicted by God, to be pierced for our transgressions, to be crushed for our iniquities, to take our chastisement, to be wounded for our spiritual healing, to carry our iniquity, to be oppressed without defending himself, to endure judgment, to be cut off, to have a grave with the wicked, to experience anguish of soul, to pour out his soul to death, to be numbered with transgressors. This is what our Savior was appointed to do. This was his redemptive mission. This was the only way for forgiveness to be granted, eternal life to be given, righteousness to be granted, acceptance with God to be guaranteed, and saving grace to be unleashed for our everyday life. He came willingly and did it all without the faintest grumble or the smallest complaint. Jesus knew that his suffering would be temporary but the fruit would be eternal, and he was willing.”
