Over the next several weeks, we will learn how to respond to the Holy Spirit’s activity in and through this church family we call Seven Marks. If you are a follower of Jesus, you have the Holy Spirit living and working in you. As a result of this work, the Spirit empowers each of us with unique gifts to bless others while bringing God glory.

MESSAGE NOTES
Mark #3
A disciple is one who responds to the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:1-3
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

Spiritual Gifts
A Spirit-given ability that enables a follower of Jesus to contribute to the building up of the church.

1 Corinthians 12:4-7
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

1 Corinthians 12:8-11
For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

Henry Blackaby, Experiencing God
“If we seek the gifts of the spirit and not the Holy Spirit Himself, we’ll always focus on self. We must learn to understand that there are no gifts apart from an intimate relationship with the Spirit…The true answer to the question is this: The Holy Spirit is the gift. He himself is the indispensable gift of God to your life. He’s the third person of the Trinity, just as needful in your life as the other two.”

Affinity speaks to passion, stuff you love to do and that brings energy

Ability speaks to things that come naturally to you or things that you are good at

Affirmation speaks to the things that others have noticed and spoken positively to you about over time.

“You don’t live to work, and you don’t work to live. You work to bring God’s life to this world.”

In response to the Holy Spirit, how can I use the gifting and abilities He has given me for the benefit of the body?

1 Peter 4:10,11
“As good stewards of the manifold grace of God, each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another. If anyone speaks, he should speak as one conveying the words of God. If anyone serves, he should serve with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.”
