Wide Open, Part 2

WIDE OPEN
Open Eyes
May 1, 2022 | By Josh Via

Like a boat that never sails, as followers of Jesus, we are happy with believing but never share Jesus’ love with others. We live in the marina. Close enough to the shore to be safe and close enough to the sea to get a sense of the action, but always anchored in place. Jesus didn’t intend us to live this way.

MESSAGE NOTES
Acts 1:8
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my WITNESSES in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

John 3:8
“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 3:6
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.”

Henry Blackaby, Experiencing God
“We don’t choose what we will do for God; He invites us to join Him where He wants to involve us.”

Two Clarifying Questions
1. “God, what are you saying and doing?
2. What do You want me to do about it?”

Spiritual Attentiveness
Paying careful attention to the voice and activity of God.

Acts 17:16
Now while Paul was waiting for them (his traveling companions) at Athens, his spirit was PROVOKED within him as he saw that the city was full of idols.

Acts 17:22-23
So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I PERCEIVE that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and OBSERVED the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.”

Matthew 9:36
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Simple Responsiveness
Stepping into the current of God’s voice and activity.

Acts 17:17-19
So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, “What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”–because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection. And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?”

Galatians 5:25
If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

Acts 17:18
Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”–because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.

1 Corinthians 15:14
And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith…

1 Corinthians 15:17
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins…

1 Corinthians 15:20
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
