The Bad News First, Part 1

THE BAD NEWS FIRST
Individual Sin
March 19, 2023 | By Joseph McCormick

So here’s the bad news: we are going to talk about sin for the next three weeks. Sin, as we will see throughout this series, is both messy and complicated. Sin is an easy subject when we are talking about your sin or their sin, but not so much when the topic is my sin. The good news is that Easter is coming. And Easter means that no matter how bad the bad news is, the good news is better.

MESSAGE NOTES

An underdeveloped view of sin leads to an underwhelming view of your Savior.

Galatians 5:1, NIV
“It is for freedom’s sake that Christ has set us free.”

Sin is missing the mark.

Genesis 1:27
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Romans 3:23, NIV
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

G.K. Chesterton
“Dear Sir: Regarding your article ‘What’s Wrong with the World?’ I am. Yours truly,”

Sins of Commission.
Sins of Omission.
Sins of Imperfection.

James 4:17, NIV
If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

Matthew 6:5, NIV
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”

Sin is separation.

Sin leads to death.

Romans 6:23, NIV
For the wages of sin is death…

Romans 3:23-24, NIV
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:23, NIV
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:21, NIV
God made him (Jesus) who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

1. Be humble.

John 1:8-9, NIV
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

2. Be bold.

Hebrews 4:15-16, NIV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Martin Luther
Sin boldly, but let your trust in Christ be stronger, and rejoice in Christ who is the victor over sin, death, and the world.
