Selfless, Part 2

SELFLESS
Non-Anxious Presence
May 29, 2022 | By Joseph McCormick

The chaotic state and frantic pace of life have left our world collectively breathless. Recent times have provided Christians with an amazing opportunity to demonstrate the gospel’s radically distinct yet culturally relevant power. How? By giving people the gift of a non-anxious presence.

MESSAGE NOTES

The way of Jesus is best demonstrated when it is both relevant to the culture around us, yet radically different in its response.

A frantic life is not selfless. A frantic life is not compelling. A frantic life is not worth imitating. A peaceful life is all those things and more.

Mark 4:35-38
On that day, when evening had come, Jesus said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

Observation #1
The Sea is the Setting.

Revelation 21:1
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth, ”for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.

Observation #2
There were other boats in this story with Jesus.

Mark 4:36
And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.

Observation #3
There were two storms in this story.

Mark 4:38
“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

Mark 4:39-41
And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Josh Garrels
“My rest is a weapon, against the oppression, of man’s obsession to control things.”
