Out of the Depths, Part 7

OUT OF THE DEPTHS
Shame
October 23, 2022 | By Paul Crouthamel

Shame and guilt are two of the most powerful emotions a human being can experience. These emotions are normally the result of something bad we have done, are doing, or even the result of bad things that have been done to us. They make us feel unworthy, unlovable, and unredeemable. The gospel, however, says that your guilt and shame are the prerequisites for receiving God’s love, grace, and forgiveness.

MESSAGE NOTES

Tim Keller
“There are other prayers in the Bible, but no other place where you have an entire course of theology in prayer form, and no other place where you have every possible heart condition represented, along with the way to process that situation before God.”

Genesis 2:25
And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Genesis 3:6-10
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

Daniel Dewitt
Though Guilt and Shame are twins, born in the garden, only moments apart, they aren’t identical. Guilt is usually tied to an event: I did something bad. Shame is tied to a person: I am bad. Guilt is the wound. Shame is the scar.

Cry of the Soul
Shame is rooted in our inherent preference to trust false gods rather than depend on God for each and every moment of our existence.

Psalm 32:3-4
For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.

Psalm 51:3-4
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.

Psalm 51:8-9
Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Psalm 51:11
Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Psalm 32:5
I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Psalm 51:1-2
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

Psalm 51:7
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

1. He owned up to the truth.

Psalm 32:5
I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity…

Psalm 66:16-19
Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. I cried to him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer.

2. He confessed and repented of his sin.

Psalm 32:5
I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

3. He walked in the freedom of forgiveness and grace.

Psalm 32:1-2
“Blessed the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity and in whose spirit there is no deceit.”
