Out of the Depths, Part 6

OUT OF THE DEPTHS
Contempt
October 16, 2022 | By Josh Via

Contempt can be defined as an emotion, often stemming from pride, that leads us to disrespect another image bearer of God. It can be a problem for all of us daily. In Psalm 123, when the Psalmist fixes His eyes on God, he discovers a fresh perspective. He finds that the respect he feels toward God, His King, becomes the antidote for the disrespect he has felt for others.

MESSAGE NOTES

A look can change everything.

Psalm 123:1-4
To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt. Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

Contempt is the emotion originating from pride that disrespects another image bearer of God.

The Cry of the Soul
“Tragically, we use contempt daily without being aware of what we are doing. How does contempt spread its poison in our everyday encounters? Contempt shows its everyday face in all gossip, most boasting, and all blameshifting.”

Psalm 123:1
To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!

Beholding is Becoming.

2 Corinthians 3:18
“And we all, with unveiled face, BEHOLDING the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”

Dane Ortlund
“For every one look at yourself, take ten looks at Jesus.”

2 Chronicles 20:12
“O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, BUT OUR EYES ARE ON YOU.”

Psalm 123:2
Behold, AS THE EYES OF SERVANTS look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, SO OUR EYES LOOK to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us.

Psalm 123:2 MSG
“We’re watching and waiting, holding our breath, awaiting your word of mercy.”

John 13:12-17
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he [Jesus] said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Matthew 5:43-47
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

1 Peter 2:20-23
For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
