Open Handed, Part 5

November 26, 2023 | By Joseph McCormick

How do you live when you know that no one sees you? The true test of a person’s character is what they do when no one else is watching. And let’s be honest, this can be a tricky question to answer, at least when it comes to ourselves. This is undoubtedly why Jesus had much to say about who we are in secret in his famous Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew 6:1-4
Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.“ So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

You can do all the right things, but for all the wrong reasons.

How do you live when you know no one sees you?

Proverbs 5:21
For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and He examines all your paths.

Hebrews 4:13
“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

How do you live when you know God sees all of you?

1. The love of God is rooted in fact, not fiction.

Romans 5:6-8
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

2. Even if no one else sees the good in you or the good you do, God does.

Galatians 6:9
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
