Life with the Spirit, Part 4

LIFE WITH THE SPIRIT
Who Defines You?
July 12, 2026 | By Dr. Jason Tovey

Everyone is being shaped by something.

Our culture tells us we’re defined by our success, our failures, our relationships, our past, or what other people think about us. But what if none of those voices get the final word?

In Part 4 of Life with the Spirit, we look at Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness and discover how the Holy Spirit continually reminds us who the Father says we are. When we know our identity, we’re able to resist lies, trust God in difficult seasons, and walk with confidence instead of fear.

If you’ve ever struggled with insecurity, shame, comparison, or feeling like you have to prove yourself, this message is for you. We’d love for you to watch, reflect, and join us as we learn what it means to experience God’s presence every day.

MESSAGE NOTES

Matthew 3v13–17
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

–

Identity isn’t earned by performance—it is bestowed through relationship.

–

Matthew 4v1–2
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

–

Matthew 4v3–4
And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

–

The enemy attacks what God declares.

–

Temptation is trying to meet a legitimate need in an illegitimate way.

–

Matthew 4v4
But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

–

Matthew 4v5–7
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

–

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

–

Matthew 4v8-10
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”

–

Matthew 4v11
Then the devil left him, and behold, mangels came and were ministering to him.

–

Hebrews 2v17-18
Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

What “wilderness” is the Holy Spirit using to expose what I’m believing about myself?

–

What message have I been believing about myself instead of what the Father has declared about me in Christ?

–

Where am I striving to earn what the Father has already given me in Christ?

–

What would change if I truly believed what God says about me in Christ?
