Encounter, Part 4

ENCOUNTER
The Disciples
April 21, 2024 | By Josh Via

Fear is universal, manifesting differently in each individual, but pervasive nonetheless in our anxious society. From the fear of wars and terrorism to economic instability and personal uncertainties, it touches every aspect of life, including dreams, relationships, and mortality. Yet, amidst this fear, the message of Jesus to his disciples offers a profound reassurance: His presence brings peace that transcends understanding, inviting believers to embrace a life anchored in his promises of wholeness and flourishing.

MESSAGE NOTES

John 20:19-23
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Warren Wiersbe
“The work of the cross is peace (Eph. 2:14-17; Romans 5:1) and the message they would carry would be the Gospel of peace (Romans 10:15). Man had declared war on God (Psalm 2; Acts 4:23-30) but God would declare “Peace!” to those who would believe.”

Ephesians 6:15
“…and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.”

Mark Sayers, A Non-Anxious Presence
“The root of our anxiety is our disconnection from God; this means we cannot be a non anxious presence without God’s presence.”
